How to Check If an LLC Name Is Available in Georgia

Last verified: November 1, 2026 · Sources are cited at the bottom of this page.

The short answer

Short answer: Georgia's official search is the Secretary of State's eCorp Business Search at ecorp.sos.ga.gov. It is free and needs no login. The trap is printed right on the search page: "This search is not intended to serve as a name availability search." A clean result is a strong signal, but your name is only confirmed when the state accepts your Articles of Organization.

The official search

The Georgia Secretary of State, Corporations Division runs business records through its eCorp system, which handles searching, filing, and annual registrations in one place.

A record shows the business name, Control Number (the state's file number), entity type, status such as Active/Compliance or Admin. Dissolved, principal office address, registered agent, and filing history. One thing the record will never show: who owns or runs an LLC. Georgia does not collect LLC members or managers, so there is no ownership information to find.

Step by step

  1. Open eCorp Business Search and choose Business Name as the search field.
  2. Pick a match mode. eCorp offers Starts With, Contains, and Exact Match. Run your name without "LLC" using Contains first — it catches the most conflicts. Use Exact Match last, to see whether the precise name is already taken.
  3. Work through close matches. Your name must be distinguishable from corporations, LLCs, and limited partnerships; foreign entities registered in Georgia; nonprofit and professional entities; and reserved or registered names. Open any result that looks similar and check its status and type.
  4. Try variations. Shorten the name, change word order, and test obvious spelling variants. A creative spelling does not make a sound-alike name safe.
  5. Use the other search fields if needed. You can also search by Control Number, Registered Agent Name, or Officer Name — though the officer search is useless for LLCs, since Georgia collects no LLC officers.
  6. Treat the result as a signal, not a verdict. eCorp says so itself: availability is only settled when your Articles of Organization are accepted.

Georgia's name rules

The rules are in O.C.G.A. §14-11-207.

Designator. The name must contain "limited liability company" or "limited company" (with "Limited" abbreviable as "Ltd." and "Company" as "Co."), or the abbreviation "L.L.C.," "LLC," "L.C.," or "LC."

Distinguishable. The name must be distinguishable on the records of the Secretary of State from the names of corporations, LLCs, and limited partnerships; foreign entities with a Georgia certificate of authority; nonprofit corporations, professional corporations, and professional associations on file; and any reserved or registered name.

Length cap. A Georgia LLC name cannot exceed 80 characters, including spaces and punctuation. A long name can be rejected on length alone.

A warning written into the statute. Section 14-11-207 itself states that the state issuing a name "does not affect the commercial availability of the name." In plain English: Georgia's check covers filing records only, not trademark rights, and the chapter does not govern fictitious or trade (DBA) names.

Prohibited words. The statute contains no separate banned-word list. Keep in mind that in filing practice, names implying a government affiliation or an unlicensed regulated activity can draw rejection.

Reserving a name. You can reserve a name for $35 — but it holds the name for only 30 days and the fee is non-refundable. Most states give 120 days, which is why many Georgia founders skip the reservation and simply file.

What the search can't tell you

If the name looks available

File Articles of Organization (Form CD 030) with the Corporations Division — online through eCorp (account required) or by mail or hand delivery in Atlanta. Paper filings also need Transmittal Information Form CD 231.

Ongoing: the Annual Registration. Every Georgia LLC files an annual registration during the January 1 – April 1 window each year.
